Dr. Rafael Carbunaru is the vice president of research and development for the Neuromodulation division of Boston Scientific, where he is responsible for providing overall leadership and strategic planning for the group, along with his unique vision, inspiration, and motivation.
During his two-decade tenure at Boston Scientific, Rafael has leveraged his extensive experience in research and development and strategic planning, along with his strong personal drive and mission, to help improve the lives of others by bringing to market innovative healthcare products and services.
Prior to his time with Boston Scientific, Rafael was the principal biomedical systems engineer for Advanced Bionics, where he was responsible for the seamless integration of all the components of next generation implantable neurostimulation systems. Here, he also developed clinical protocols/procedures and trained clinicians and patients on them during clinical trials.
Rafael earned a bachelor’s degree in electronics engineering from the Universidad Simon Bolivar in Venezuela, and a master’s and doctorate degrees in biomedical engineering from Case Western Reserve University. He was named to the College of Fellows of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, and, as a prolific inventor, holds more than 60 U.S. and international patents.
